The Board of Trustees unanimously elected Prof. Arie Zaban as Bar-Ilan University’s next President. Prof. Zaban will assume the presidency in October 2017 when outgoing President Rabbi Prof. Daniel Hershkowitz completes his term of office. Veteran BIU trustees Jane Stern Lebell and Romie Tager were elected Vice Chairpersons of the Board of Trustees.

Bar-Ilan University awards its highest honor to nine esteemed recipients, including the Rishon LeZion and Jerusalem’s Sephardic Chief Rabbi Shlomo Moshe Amar, French philosopher and humanitarian Bernard-Henri Lévy, national sports icon and goodwill ambassador Tal Brody, and the national emergency medical service Magen David Adom, who – together with their fellow honorees – have made far-reaching contributions to Israeli society, the Jewish nation, science, technology, education and culture.

Senior diplomats from more than 60 countries convened at BIU’s 15th Ambassadors’ Forum to hear about “Israel’s New Normal? Expanding International and Regional Ties” from Col. (res) Dr. Eran Lerman, former deputy chief of the National Security Council and senior IDF Military Intelligence division director. Now a senior research associate at BIU’s Begin-Sadat (BESA) Center for Strategic Studies, Lerman stated that in addition to the commonality of values and strategic interest and concerns which Israel shares with the US and Canada, it has “tools of cooperation” such as gas resources, state-of-the-art agricultural technology and other vital assets that have brought it closer to other countries.

Celebrating the start of the 2016/2017 Academic Year at BIU, students excitedly gather to snap a selfie. Bar-Ilan University’s vibrant campus is home to 21,000 students, among them 1,250 Israeli Arabs (a 20% increase from last year!), about 140 members of the Ultra-Orthodox community, hundreds of French and Anglo Olim, and more than a dozen doctoral and postdoctoral candidates from China.

Competing in wheelchair tennis at the Rio 2016 Paralympics, BIU alumnus Itai Erenlib and teammate Shraga Weinberg just barely missed out on a bronze medal in the men’s Quad Doubles after falling in a third-set tie-breaker with the British team. But the near win itself is a cause for celebration as it attests to Erenlib’s tenacious efforts to overcome a life-changing injury incurred while serving as an IDF officer in the Paratroopers’ Special Forces.

Speaking to a packed auditorium on “NASA’s Journey to Mars and Beyond,” the Hon. Charles F. Bolden, Jr. (pictured in center with Rona Ramon, wife of the late Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon, and BIU President Rabbi Dr. Daniel Hershowitz) said Israel “has incredibly innovative people on the cutting edge of technology” who can help NASA achieve its goal of reaching Mars in the 2030s. “We are excited about ongoing relations with the Israel Space Agency and what we can do together on the International Space Station (ISS),” said the 4-time astronaut and NASA Administrator, noting that some 250 experiments are conducted during each six-month expedition on the ISS.

Through Bar-Ilan’s innovative Otzmot “Empowerment” Program, students with intellectual disabilities have the opportunity to study at the University and learn how to fulfill the Jewish commandments. Students in the program who are capable of learning at a higher level can earn a bachelor’s degree as well.

BIU had the highest number of women recognized in Women magazine’s Academia and Education categories among all Israeli universities. Women selected 12 Bar-Ilan affiliated women on its listing of religious Zionist women in Israel who have reached the highest ranks in their fields.
