Medicine among the Mystics
TRANSFORMING THE NORTH
BAR-ILAN’S STRATEGY IN SHAPING ISRAEL’S FUTURE

The Azrieli School of Medicine in the Galilee was established in 2011 in Safed in response to the shortage of physicians and the need for improved health care in the region. As a national priority project of the government of Israel, it has steadily increased the quality of medical care and diagnostic facilities. The BIU Medical School has become an integral part of its community, boasting sweeping campuses, state-of-the-art medical facilities, research centers, and involvement in community-targeted activities.

NEXT GENERATION
OF DOCTORS
IN ISRAEL
The Azrieli School of Medicine is a catalyst for Israel’s growing biomedical research and is attracting capital and infrastructure projects, creating new jobs and upscaling prosperity among the diverse populations in Northern Israel.

Today’s students become tomorrow’s primary care physicians, specialists, and medical researchers. Using the most advanced training methods from the best trained scientists and researchers, the School provides a thorough medical education for its students. It has already gained distinction by placing second in the psychiatry and gynecology exam scores at the national level.

OUTSTANDING FACULTY
ADDRESSING REGIONAL NEEDS
Faculty members include top scientists recruited from around the world – many of whom have won prestigious awards for medical research in microbiology, genetics, and breast cancer, among other areas of science and medicine. They advance an innovative approach, integrating theoretical knowledge with clinical work and education stressing practical problem solving to specific human diseases, such as cancer, infectious and auto-immune diseases, and age-related illnesses.

Project Rafael works to create academic-community partnerships to define and address the region’s most pressing health needs. This includes such programs as a culturally tailored model working with psychiatric patients who are reticent to seek help from mental health services, to reduce environmental health risks in the kibbutzim of Upper Galilee, where exposure to harmful materials is a real concern. And the ETGAR Center, a new population health community initiative, assists the neediest patients as they are discharged from hospitals.

ENCOURAGING GROWTH
IN THE GALILEE
The Bar-Ilan School of Medicine has created new job opportunities for residents of the Galilee, as well as providing greater levels of education in Safed through increased numbers of projects with local schools and public events. This, in turn, has attracted new families and professionals to the city and upgraded the level of health care and education at local hospitals.

Just as significant, more students and professionals have opted to study, teach and/or practice at Bar-Ilan University’s School of Medicine due to BIU’s stellar reputation.

EXPANSION
“The BIU School of Medicine is helping us realize our vision of Northern Israel becoming a center of knowledge and know-how in the life sciences, and encouraging the establishment of medical and biotechnological institutions.”
BENJAMIN NETANYAHU
Prime Minister, State of Israel
